Year 5 to 8 Continuity

2pm – 5pm on 5th December 2018, 7th February 2019,14th March 2019 and 24th April 2019 at Saffron Walden County High School

This group, supported by Cambridge Maths Hub, will work together to improve communication between Key Stages 2 and 3, with the overall aim of improving continuity of learning by pupils in the four years between Years 5 and 8. Fractions, ratio and proportion have been given a much greater focus in both the recent KS2 and KS3 curriculums and this is also reflected in the new GCSE exams. Participants will be looking at how they can deepen pupils understanding of the underlying multiplicative mathematics is crucial to supporting progress across KS2, into KS3 and beyond.

Mathematical thinking

10am – 2.45pm on 29th Nov 2018, then 12.45pm – 3.30pm on 31st Jan 2019, 13th Mar 2019 and 12th June 2019 at Saffron Walden County High School

Also supported by the Cambridge Maths Hub these sessions are aimed at secondary maths departments and teachers wishing to begin or continue a programme of professional development addressing the reasoning and problem-solving challenges of the mathematics GCSE. This Work Group would be most effective when each school sends two members of department, at least one of whom is experienced and has some leadership responsibility within the department. Physics for Non-Specialists

This programme of free workshop which is funded by the Institute of Physics is aimed at improving the physics pedagogical knowledge of KS3 and KS4 teachers. Both non-specialist and specialist teachers who could potentially teach physics in addition to their main subject as well teachers who want to retrain as physics teachers are most welcome.

Maths for Non-Specialists

There’s an acute shortage of maths teachers with many lessons are being taught by non-specialist teachers

This course is aimed at those non-specialist teachers teaching maths in secondary schools who want to gain extra confidence and good teaching techniques.

Scheduled early in the academic year so the impact can made swiftly, it will maximise the delegates ability as a non-specialist to deliver the secondary maths curriculum efficiently and effectively as well as deepen their subject knowledge. It will give them the tools to teach a tough curriculum.

The course will cover:

  • The KS3 and KS4 requirements of the new 9-1 GCSE
  • Mathematical ideas and problem solving
  • Common misconceptions

Developing a Computing Curriculum for Primary

These three twilight sessions, aimed at all Primary teachers, will provide a comprehensive insight into Computing through all the stages of Primary School.

This course aims to help teachers to really understand the Computing Curriculum at a primary level and consider how students should progress from EYFS through to being ‘secondary ready’. It will help develop an understanding of how to teach and develop Computer Science schemes of work for each year group, with practical suggestions on how to teach topics in conjunction with other parts of the curriculum. There will also be a session to build confidence in teaching using software such as Scratch.

Primary NQT Network Meetings

The sessions will be an opportunity to build a network of local newly qualified colleagues, discuss experiences and ways to develop best practice, talk to recent NQTs and most importantly eat lots of biscuits.  A range of experienced practitioners and experts will attend the sessions to offer advice and support as well as answer questions. Discussion topics will be flexible but include:
