The Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) for Life

We are offering an exciting wellbeing opportunity to attend a Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction course led by a renounced and experienced mindfulness teacher, Chantek McNeilage. Listed with the UK Network for Mindfulness-Based Teachers, Chantek McNeilage, is part of the Oxford Mindfulness Centre’s, Myriad research project which has creates this programme specifically for school teachers – MBCT for Life.

The Mindfulness and Resilience in Adolescence (Myriad) Project is the largest worldwide research into mindfulness in schools and we are incredibly fortunate to have the opportunity to be able to offer this course.

Course Outline

The Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) for Life course will includes how to:

  • recognise the tendency to be on automatic pilot
  • show more clearly the ‘chatter of the mind’
  • be more focused and gathered
  • take a wider perspective and relate differently to experiences
  • allow an attitude of acceptance which can be a major part of taking care of oneself and to see more clearly what, if anything, needs to change.
  • restrict the impact of negative moods and thoughts on the ability to relate differently to experiences
  • focus on things that can be done when depression, anxiety or stress threaten
  • make plans for how best to respond to the turmoil of the mind
  • maintain a balance in life

The sessions will run 3.45pm to 5.45pm on:

Course Outline

21st February    9.30am – 12.00pm

In the first session you will find out more about the process of becoming a teacher. Examining the different routes into teaching. We will also explore what you need in order to make a successful start in the classroom and what to expect from Initial Teacher Training. Post session activities will be set which will be of benefit in your teacher training application

7th March         9.30am – 12.00pm         

In the second session you will have an opportunity to observe a lesson in your chosen subject area with a specific focus. We will then look at what makes great teaching and learning. And finally we will also provide advice on completing an application to become a teacher.

Developing a Computing Curriculum for Primary

These three twilight sessions, aimed at all Primary teachers, will provide a comprehensive insight into Computing through all the stages of Primary School.

This course aims to help teachers to really understand the Computing Curriculum at a primary level and consider how students should progress from EYFS through to being ‘secondary ready’. It will help develop an understanding of how to teach and develop Computer Science schemes of work for each year group, with practical suggestions on how to teach topics in conjunction with other parts of the curriculum. There will also be a session to build confidence in teaching using software such as Scratch.

Train the Instructor

Want to improve your teaching delivery and discover new teaching and learning techniques to inspire children?

Train the Instructor is a series of three training sessions and personalised gap tasks which are designed especially for instructors and unqualified teachers. The course is designed to develop and refresh instructors’ core teaching, planning and assessment skills, including the ability to ensure effective behaviour for learning and offers ways to adjust your teaching style to different student needs.

The course offers an invaluable opportunity to learn the tricks of the trade, directly from fellow teachers and provides you with a series of support models for you to take away and use in your own practice.

Similarly, experienced instructors can use this course as a tool for improving teaching delivery, getting rid of bad habits, and discover new teaching and learning techniques to improve their teaching practice.

Maximising the Impact of Teaching Assistants

Teaching assistants are a large and indispensable part of the school workforce and schools face increasing scrutiny on how they use TAs and demonstrate the contribution they make to teaching and learning. Therefore, the MITA project aims to improve schools’ deployment of teaching assistants and ensure they make a valuable contribution to learning. MITA is a strategic school improvement programme aimed at School Leaders, SENCos and those who lead or oversee the work of teaching assistants in both primary and secondary schools. The three afternoon sessions will cover:

Ofsted framework pays greater attention to how TAs contribute to the quality of teaching and learning

Schools must demonstrate effective use of Pupil Premium funding to raise attainment for disadvantaged students

Forthcoming changes to SEN provision will mean provision for students with Education, Health and Care Plans is focused on outcomes
